Morse Code WPM Speed Guide: How Fast Should You Go?

Morse speed is measured in words per minute (WPM) using the standard word PARIS as a reference. At 20 WPM, each timing unit lasts 60 milliseconds.

Beginners typically start at 5–10 WPM with Farnsworth spacing. Novice ham radio exams often require 13 WPM. Conversational CW on the air commonly runs 18–25 WPM.

Do not rush speed increases. Move up only when you recognize characters instantly without counting dots and dashes. Our quiz and practice tools help you track progress at each stage.
