Ham Radio CW: A Beginner's Guide to Morse on the Air

Continuous Wave (CW) is the mode ham radio operators use to send Morse by radio. It is efficient, works when voice fails, and reaches long distances with modest power.

You will need a transceiver capable of CW, a Morse key or paddle, and license certification in your country. Many countries include a Morse element or encourage CW proficiency.

Practice on the air starts with slow CQ calls and short QSOs. Learn common abbreviations (CQ, DE, QTH, 73) and prosigns (AR, SK, K) on our abbreviations reference page before your first contact.
