SOS and Distress Signals: Complete Guide

SOS (... --- ...) was adopted internationally because the pattern is unmistakable and easy to transmit under stress. It does not abbreviate "Save Our Ship."

Maritime and aviation protocols historically relied on Morse distress. Modern satellite systems are primary, but Morse backup knowledge remains in training curricula.

Practice SOS until automatic. Our translator plays it with audio and flash. Try the word drill on the Practice page — SOS appears frequently in common word lists.
