International vs American Morse Code: Key Differences

American (railroad) Morse used different element counts for some characters and a distinct sounder rhythm. International Morse standardized patterns for global communication.

Today, amateur radio, maritime backup, and virtually all online translators use International Morse. American Morse survives mainly in historical reenactment and specialized collections.

MorseSpeak implements International Morse exclusively — the same standard used for CW on the air worldwide. Our timing follows PARIS-based WPM with optional Farnsworth spacing.
