SOS and Emergency Morse Signals
Understand why SOS uses ... --- ... and how distress signals work in maritime and aviation contexts.
SOS is the most recognized Morse code signal in the world. Three dots, three dashes, three dots — ... --- ... — has appeared in films, books, survival guides, and emergency training for over a century. Yet despite its fame, SOS is widely misunderstood. It does not stand for "Save Our Ship," "Save Our Souls," or any other phrase. It was chosen purely because the pattern is unmistakable, easy to transmit under stress, and difficult to confuse with other traffic.
The signal was adopted at the International Radiotelegraphic Convention in 1906 and became effective on July 1, 1908. Germany had proposed a general distress call of SOE, but operators noted that in International Morse the letter E is a single dot — easy to lose in static. SOS offered a symmetric pattern of three elements each, with dashes in the center creating a rhythm that stands out on a noisy radio channel. The convention also standardized the older CQD call used by Marconi operators, but SOS gradually became the primary distress marker.
Each letter in SOS uses standard International Morse: S is three dots (dit-dit-dit), O is three dashes (dah-dah-dah), and the final S repeats three dots. Other emergency-related Morse signals exist in historical and specialized contexts. CQD was Marconi's earlier distress call ("CQ" meaning general call, "D" for distress). Some military and aviation documents reference additional prosigns for urgency. Modern global distress relies primarily on digital selective calling, EPIRB beacons, and satellite notification — but Morse SOS persists in training because it requires no infrastructure beyond a signal.
False SOS transmissions are serious offenses in many jurisdictions. Deliberately sending distress traffic when no emergency exists wastes rescue resources and may carry legal penalties. Practice SOS only in learning environments, licensed amateur radio frequencies with proper identification, or approved training exercises. Never transmit SOS on active emergency channels as a test.
